The Parthenon as a Mosque
Drawing from 1670

Greece fell to the Turks in 1456. By that time, a crenelated tower had been Built on the bastion of the Propylaia. The Parthenon was converted into a mosque next to which was built a delicate minaret.

In 1687, Venetian artillery detonated a powder magazine housed inside the Parthenon.
